Joliet Man, 36, Gets 3 Years for Having Sex with 13-Year-Old

Joshua Scheun pleaded guilty to aggravated criminal sexual abuse Thursday in DuPage County court.

A 36-year-old Joliet man who had sex with a 13-year-old Villa Park girl he met online was sentenced to three years in prison Thursday.

Joshua Scheun, of 4363 Timber Ridge Court, will also have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life under the terms of a DuPage County court deal in which he agreed to plead guilty to one count of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, according to a story in the Daily Herald.

Scheun met the girl online on March 18, 2013, and traveled to Villa Park to meet her in person five days later, the DuPage County state's attorney's office said in May at the time of his arrest.

He had sex with the girl several times before the victim confided in a school counselor, who notified the victim's parents and the Villa Park police, prosecutors said.

"These circumstances should serve as a reminder to all of us that while the Internet is a useful tool in our daily lives, it can also be abused by sexual predators such as Joshua Scheun," state's attorney spokesman Paul Darrah said in the Daily Herald story.

"Parents should be observing what their children are doing while on the Internet. Parents should also teach their children to come forward to a trusted adult if they feel subjected to behavior that makes them feel uncomfortable or uneasy in any way.
