Joliet Man Nabbed for Two Car Burglaries, Police Say

A homeowner found Nicholas Maynard inside his vehicle and was able to hold him until police arrived to make the arrest, Capt. Tab Jensen said.

A Joliet homeowner caught a man in the act of burglarizing his car Sunday night, and the arrest led to a second charge for the suspect, Joliet Police Capt. Tab Jensen said.

Police were called to the 1000 block of Saddle Ridge Drive at about 9:50 p.m. and found the homeowner struggling with Nicholas M. Maynard, 31, of 1008 Parkwood, Joliet, Jensen said.

The homeowner's son initially spotted Maynard inside the victim's car, which was parked in the driveway outside their home, he said. He alerted his father, who confronted Maynard and then held him until officers arrived, he said.

While police were on the scene, a second victim approached them and said he believed Maynard had also burglarized his vehicle, Jensen said.

The second victim was at his girlfriend's house in the 200 block of New Fairfield Drive when a neighbor alerted him that someone was rummaging around in his vehicle, he said. The neighbor said the suspect was walking northbound on New Fairfield, so the man decided to try to find him, Jensen said.

When he came scene on Saddle Ridge Drive, the man told police he thought Maynard had stolen change from his vehicle, he said. Police recovered a pocketful of change from Maynard, and the girlfriend's neighbor was able to identify him as the man inside the second victim's car, Jensen said.

Maynard was charged with two counts of motor vehicle burglary and is being held in the Will County jail in lieu of $15,000 bond.
