Man Bites, Chokes Girlfriend, Attacks Dad for Intervening: Police

Michael Ryerson is also accused of biting a second man and trying to slash him with a razor blade when he tried to help the victim, Joliet police said.

A Joliet man who attacked his girlfriend and refused to let her leave -- and then fought off his father and another man who tried to intervene -- was arrested on a slough of felony charges this weekend, Joliet Police Cmdr. Al Roechner said.

The incident began Saturday night when Michael E. Ryerson, 18, and his 16-year-old girlfriend got into a fight while driving home from dinner, Roechner said. Ryerson allegedly slammed the victim's head into the windshield of the car, bit her left breast and took away her cell phone, he said.

He then drove to his 3818 Pandola Ave. home, where he forced the victim into the house and continued their physical fight, Roechner said. There, he grabbed the girl by the throat and pushed her to the floor while she was holding her 1-year-old child, he said.

When Ryerson's father attempted to stop the altercation, Ryerson punched him in the face and shoved him into a wall, Roechner said.

Ryerson then forced the girlfriend into his bedroom, where he threw her onto the bed and started to choke her, he said.

When the boyfriend of the victim's sister arrived and tried to stop the attack, Ryerson bit his right arm and tried to cut his leg with a razor blade, Roechner said. The boyfriend and sister then left the house and called police, he said.

Ryerson was taken into custody at about 7:45 p.m. and charged with felony counts of aggravated domestic battery, aggravated battery, unlawful restraint and domestic battery and with misdemeanor count of battery.

He is being held in the Will County jail pending a bond hearing.

An order of protection against Ryerson was obtained by Victoria Quigley in Will County Court on Monday. According to Will County records, Ryerson was also arrested on a charge of domestic battery by Crest Hill police in October.
