Man's Actions Leads Police to Alleged Pot-Selling Operation

A Joliet man being sought by police for trying to force his way into a building led officers to an apartment where cannabis was being packaged for sale, Joliet police said.

David M. Evans, 24, of 1210 Arthur Ave., was arrested shortly before midnight Friday on a half dozen drug- and gun-related charges in connection with the incident at 301 N. Bluff St., Cmdr. Al Roechner said.

Police were initially contacted after residents of the Bluff apartment building complained that a man was trying to get in without a key, Roechner said. When officers reached the building's third floor they spotted a man fitting the suspect's description going into Apt. 307, he said.

Inside, police found Evans as well as several adults and children, Roechner said. On the kitchen table was 117 grams of marijuana being packaged for sale he said.

Evans had a loaded .380-caliber gun in his waistband, and a 16-year-old boy was holding a .38-caliber gun.

Evans was charged with armed violence, a Class X felony, as well as manufacture/delivery of 30 to 500 grams of cannabis, felon in possession of a weapon, possession of a firearm as a known gang member, illegal possession of ammunition without an FOID card, battery and resisting a peace officer.

The 16-year-old was charged with armed violence, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and possession of cannabis. He is being held in the River Valley Juvenile Detention Center.

Several others were taken into custody at the scene, but no charges were filed.

Evans is being held in the Will County jail pending a bond hearing. According to jail and circuit clerk records, he's been arrested on a charge of manufacture/delivery of 10 to 30 grams of cannabis in 2008, possession of cannabis in 2009, domestic battery in 2007 and disorderly conduct in 2010 and 2011.
