The driver, hauling glass bottles, was heading westbound and struck the Chicago Street overpass.
An overnight accident in which a truck driver hauling glass bottles struck the Center Street overpass on westbound Interstate 80 snarled traffic for several hours Thursday morning, according to the Illinois State Police.
The male driver was hospitalized in serious condition at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet. He was ticketed for failure to reduce speed and improper lane usage.
The accident took place at about 12:20 a.m. Thursday, and all lanes of traffic were reopened by about 7:30 a.m.
The Illinois Department of Transportation will examine the bridge to ensure there is no structural damage, state police said.
