Man With Heroin, Xanax Captured At Route 59 Walmart: Cops

JOLIET, IL — A 29-year-old Joliet man was arrested Friday night at the Walmart on Route 59 with Xanax pills and heroin inside his backpack that he brought into the store, Joliet Police Department reports show.

Joliet police booked Dakota Smith into the Will County Jail and he has been charged with delivery of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance and retail theft.

A 29-year-old Joliet woman who was with him at Walmart was arrested on retail theft charges, and she got released on an I-bond, police reports show.

Friday's crime occurred around 6 p.m. According to Joliet police, Smith and the woman were seen concealing merchandise in a backpack at the Walmart. The pair proceeded to a check-out lane to make a small purchase, but they did not pay for the items concealed in the backpack, police said.

"Both attempted to leave but were contacted by employees and held until officers arrived. Officers searched Smith’s backpack, recovering multiple bags of a white substance that later tested positive for heroin and numerous Xanax pills. Officers recovered additional Xanax pills after searching Smith," Joliet police said.

Smith, who lives in the 3100 block of September Drive, remained in the Will County Jail on Monday night unable to post 10 percent of his $20,000 bail, jail records state.
