JOLIET, IL — The Will/Grundy Major Crimes Task Force announced Friday that the 29-year-old Nicholson Street resident shot multiple times by a Joliet police officer remains in stable condition as he is recovering and alert at his bed inside the AMITA St. Joe's hospital.

Whitmore, as Joliet Patch reported Thursday, was shot three times at his house at 1200 Nicholson St. The house is rental unit owned by well-known Joliet lawyer Dan Kallan.

Kroll said the Joliet police officer who shot Whitmore is a 21-year-plus veteran of the Joliet Police Department.

"This Officer and the other JPD Officer on the scene of this shooting are scheduled to be interviewed by Task Force investigators early next week. The Task Force is working closely with the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office regarding this incident," Kroll's news release from Friday stated.

At this time, it has not been determined whether Whitmore will face any criminal charges in connection with Thursday's incident, Kroll said.

On Thursday, a relative of Whitmore told Patch that he lives at the house with his mother. The cousin told Patch that Cord Whitmore has significant mental health issues and Joliet police officers "are very aware" of his mental history.

Todd Mercer, who lives about a block away from the shooting, said that the Joliet police officers who patrol the Cunningham Neighborhood do a great job.

"I'm a pro-police guy, and I believe the Joliet Police Department does great, especially the NPO's (Neighborhood Police Officers) in Cunningham."
