Shots Fired On Garnsey: Man Arrested By Joliet Police

Joliet police say gunshots were fired shortly before noon Sunday near Jackson Street and Garnsey Avenue.

JOLIET, IL — An 18-year-old Joliet man was arrested by Joliet police after someone fired a gun in the direction of another motorist shortly before noon Sunday. The shooting happened on the city's east side near Jackson Street and Garnsey Avenue.

Joliet police arrested Sergio Hernandez and booked the teenager into the Will Countu Jail on charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and not having a FOID card.

Joliet police learned of the shooting at 11:47 a.m.

"Officers met with a victim who claimed that he had been shot at. Further investigation determined that the victim was driving northbound in the 400 block of Garnsey Avenue at which time an occupant from a passing vehicle fired one round at him," Joliet police reports show.

Nobody was hit by the errant gunfire, police said.

A description of the shooter and the shooter's car was relayed to other Joliet police.

"Officers checking the area located a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle and conducted a traffic stop near Jackson Street and Ottawa Street. Hernandez was identified as an occupant of the vehicle," reports state.

After pulling over Hernandez for questioning, Joliet officers saw the handle of a gun under his leg, police said. Police ordered him out of the car. He was put in handcuffs and the gun was taken into evidence, police said.

Hernandez lives in the 300 block of Joliet's West Marion Street, county jail records show.
