Speeding Stop Leads to Bust on Gun, Cannabis Charges
Joliet police said they stopped the suspects driving 43 mph in a 30-mph zone, and discovered a loaded 9mm handgun and a bag of cannabis in the car.
Four people were arrested on gun and pot charges early Saturday morning after a police officer stopped them for speeding on a residential street, Joliet Police Cmdr. Al Roechner said.
The bust occurred at about 2:10 a.m. Saturday at the intersection of Jefferson Street and Woodlawn Avenue when the officer pulled the driver over for doing 43 mph in a 30-mph zone, Roechner said.
The arresting officer noticed the odor of cannabis coming from the car, and then recovered about 7 grams of marijuana from the car's console and a loaded 9mm handgun from beneath the front passenger side seat, he said. The gun was later discovered have been stolen in Pender County, N.C.
The suspects are Raekwon D. Campbell, 17, of 914 Parkwood Drive, Joliet; Kenneth M. Housley, 20, of 2111 Englewood Drive, Lockport; Derronta D. Barefield, 19, of 817 Robin Lane, Joliet; and Janise N. Williams, 19, of 1515 Queen Lace Drive, Joliet.
Because no one admitted to owning the gun or the pot, all four were charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a stolen firearm, possession of a weapon without an FOID card, possession of ammunition with an FOID card and possession of 2.5 to 10 grams of cannabis.
Campbell was also charged with unlawful possession of a firearm by a known street gang member.
All four are being held in the Will County jail.
