Woman, 23, Killed On I-55 After Chain Reaction Crash: State Police

Several patients were taken to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries, the Illinois State Police announced.

BRAIDWOOD, IL ? The Will County Coroner's Office of Laurie Summers has investigated its first traffic fatality of 2024 as a 23-year-old woman from Galesburg died after being struck by a vehicle along Interstate 55 in Braidwood on Monday night.

The coroner's office has identified the victim as 23-year-old Destiny E. Dixon, and she was pronounced dead at 8:24 p.m. at the Ascension St. Josephs Medical Center in Joliet.

Dixon was a pedestrian who was struck by a motor vehicle along the northbound stretch of I-55 at mile marker 231 at 7:31 p.m.

According to the Illinois State Police, state troopers were notified of a crash in Grundy County along I-55 involving a car colliding with a semi-trailer, causing the car to roll over into the left lane. Then, a second crash occurred involving a passing vehicle and pedestrians who were assisting the rolled over vehicle from the first crash, authorities said.

Several patients were taken to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries, the Illinois State Police announced. All lanes were shut down and traffic was diverted off at Gardner Road until around midnight.
