Woman Damaged Her Own Mother's Car On Purpose: Joliet Police

Being secured in the back of a squad car, Enriqueta Smith tried to spit at and bite an officer, Joliet police say.

JOLIET ? The Joliet Police Department announced that a 33-year-old Lockport woman now faces several criminal charges in connection with allegations that she damaged her own mother's vehicle and did it on purpose.

Enriqueta Smith was arrested and released on a notice to appear by Joliet police on charges of felony criminal damage to property, two counts of aggravated assault and obstructing/resisting a peace officer.

Joliet police spokesman Dwayne English provided the following police narrative, said that at 7:03 a.m. Nov. 10, Joliet officers responded to a house in the 2200 block of Gray Hawk Drive for a disturbance. The officers learned that following an argument with another woman at the residence, Smith damaged her mother?s vehicle by breaking the gear shift, turn signal handle and the rearview mirror.

Smith indicated to the officers that she had intentionally caused the damage, English said. When the officers attempted to place Smith into custody, she began to struggle with them, according to police.

While being secured in the back of a squad car, police say Smith tried to spit at and bite an officer. Smith then made suicidal statements, so the officers contacted a Joliet Fire Department ambulance, and she was taken to St Joseph Medical Center for an evaluation, English said.

Smith also tried to spit on paramedics without success, police said. She was released from the hospital a short time later, and she was taken to the Joliet Police Department, where she was processed and released.
