Woman Picked Up for Making Bogus 911 Calls: Police

A Joliet woman, angered that Joliet police wouldn't help her retrieve belongings from a former residence because it was too late, was arrested for making false 911 emergency calls, Joliet Police Cmdr. Al Roechner said.

Elizabeth M. Pope, 28, of 260 Ruby St., was arrested shortly after midnight Tuesday at Mason and Vine streets after she allegedly made three 911 calls in less than 10 minutes, two of which were simply to lodge angry complaints against the police, Roechner said.

Pope initially contacted the police at about 9 p.m. Monday and asked that they accompany her to a home in the 700 block of Clement so she could pick up her belongings without being bothered by the person who lived there, he said. The police complied, but allowed her to take only a few items because her vehicle was not large enough for what she needed to transport, he said.

The officers advised Pope to get a larger vehicle and return the next day, at which time they would accompany her again, Roechner said. This angered Pope, who called 911 again at 11:45 p.m. Monday to ask that officers be sent to help her; she was told it was too late and she should call on Tuesday, he said.

Instead, she called 911 again at 11:53 p.m. and told the dispatcher, "You pigs are a (expletive) disgrace." And again at 11:54 p.m. to say, "You don't help anyone."

Police tracked Pope down to the Mason and Vine intersection and took her into custody on a felony charge. She was also picked up on an outstanding Will County warrant.
