Another Upscale Dining Option In La Grange
Restaurant calls itself a "neighborhood gem with a big city vibe."
LA GRANGE, IL — Elms are plentiful in La Grange's historic areas, so a local family thought "The Elm" would be a good name for one of La Grange's newest restaurants. Like Marco's Kitchen, The Elm opened after the pandemic's start.
The owners, Dan and Caitlin Spain, say the business is more than a restaurant, but an event space. Their website describes it as a "neighborhood gem with a big city vibe."
The upscale restaurant, which had been offering curbside service, opened in late May when the state allowed outdoor seating. And now it's offering indoor dining, which was permitted as of Friday.

Dan Spain is the owner of Spain Development, a general contracting company that focuses on high-end construction projects. Caitlin Spain, who grew up in Western Springs and went to Lyons Township High School, has a flair for creating "cool spaces with an upbeat vibe," The Elm's website says.
The chef is Eddie Jobin, who has worked as executive chef in several restaurants, including Parker's in Downers Grove.

The Elm, which is at 23 W. Harris Ave., trained staff for three days until March 13, when the state ordered restaurants to close their dining rooms by March 16, according to Suburban Life.
"I had to say to 16 people I just hired that I had to furlough them until further notice, and I had to tell 24 people I can't hire you that first week," Spain told the publication. "I was supposed to hire 24 more people that Wednesday, but what are you going to do?"
