Block-by-Block La Grange: Where Are Children in Poverty, Families Without Plumbing?

With Thanksgiving a week away, Patch is rolling out a series of maps to raise awareness about people in the area who are doing without. 

Map: What Part of La Grange Has the Most Children in Poverty?
The map shows a snapshot across town of the percentage of children living below the poverty line. Poverty can make life tremendously challenging for children. Studies show that children growing up in poverty are more likely to have problems in school, develop health issues and remain poor as adults. More than 20 percent of all children in the U.S. live in poverty. That’s about 16.4 million children and 4.5 percent more than in the start of the Great Recession in 2007.

Map: Which Low-Income Families Are Without Plumbing in La Grange, LG Park?
The map shows a snapshot of the percentage of people living in poverty and the percentage of homes without plumbing across town. People normally don’t think of water scarcity as being a problem in the U.S. but, in fact, about 10 million people lack access to clean water in developed countries.

Map: How Are Veteran Communities Changing?
The map shows two snapshots of our local area: the map shaded in green shows the percentage of people who moved in after 2004 and the map shaded in blue shows the percentage of veterans across town.

Map: What Part of Town Has the Most Post-Graduate Degree Holders?
Roughly 11 percent of the total population has a graduate or professional degree. The map shows a snapshot across town of the percentage of people, 25 years and over, with those degrees.

Map: Where Are Grandchildren Living With Grandparents in La Grange, LG Park?
The number of grandchildren living with their grandparents spiked during the Great Recession. The map below shows a estimate across town of the number of grandparents living with their grandchildren under 18 years old. The map shows a snapshot across town of the number of grandparents living with their grandchildren under 18 years old. It's based on estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau.
