La Grange Hits Low In New Virus Cases: County

The community sees one more coronavirus death in the last week.

LA GRANGE, IL — La Grange saw the lowest rate of increase in new coronavirus cases last week since the onset of the crisis.

As of Sunday, La Grange, including La Grange Highlands, had seen 1,744 coronavirus cases since the beginning of the pandemic, up 32 from a week before, or a 1.9 percent increase, according to the Cook County Public Health Department. The three previous weeks were, chronologically, 4.6 percent, 6.4 percent, 3.4 percent and 2.5 percent.

Since early October, La Grange's cases have increased by more than three times. The number of those who have recovered is unavailable.

According to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office, the local number of coronavirus-related deaths increased by one in the last week, to 30. The latest death was Jan. 28. All the local deaths have been those who were 62 or older, according to the medical examiner.

The mortality rate among La Grange cases is 1.7 percent. Of the entire population of La Grange and La Grange Highlands, 9 percent have been infected with the coronavirus. About a tenth of 1 percent of the population have died from the virus.

As of Sunday, La Grange, including La Grange Highlands, had 91.3 coronavirus cases per thousand people, worse than its surveyed neighbors. The figure compares to 65.2 in La Grange Park, 65.7 in Darien, 67.6 in Western Springs, 71.4 in Hinsdale, 74.3 in DuPage County, 75.5 in Elmhurst, 78.7 in Clarendon Hills, 82.2 in suburban Cook County and 86.3 in Burr Ridge.

As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 1,126,301, up 2.3 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 19,243 state residents.

Nationally, 25.9 million people have caught the virus, up 4.2 percent from the week before. A total of 438,035 people have died from the virus in the United States.
