La Grange HS Student Earns Scholarship, Full Ride For 'Excellent' Caddying
She's deciding between Notre Dame and Indiana University.
Submitted by Nazareth Academy.
Nazareth Academy is pleased to announce that Brooke Gawel, a senior from Chicago, has earned the Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship. The Evans Scholarship is a full tuition and housing college scholarship for golf caddies that is renewable for up to four years. Recipients must display a strong caddie record, excellent grades and outstanding character.
“I intend to study Science Business at Notre Dame or Business at Indiana University,” says Brooke, who is still undecided on where she’ll attend college. “The holistic education, community environment and endless academic opportunities compel me to Notre Dame. Their Science Business major enables me to combine two of my passions and interests and pursue a variety of career options. Indiana's prestigious Kelley School of Business originally attracted me.

Additionally, I soon recognized the school’s beautiful campus, welcoming atmosphere and endless opportunities to become involved, including their annual dance marathon to raise money for Riley Children's Hospital and possibly continuing my passion for dance as a RedStepper.”
Brooke is in her fourth year as a caddie at Beverly Country Club. “I will forever value the conversations, interactions and real world experiences with influential and successful men and women that I have obtained from caddying.”

According to the Western Golf Association (WGA), Evans Scholars require excellence in “scholarship, fellowship and leadership,” requirements which align with Nazareth’s mission.
When asked how Nazareth prepared her for this scholarship, Brooke answered, “Whether it was in the classroom, on the Poms team or within the new friendships I formed, Nazareth’s emphasis on family and spirit promoted fellowship. Nazareth also cultivated leadership through my involvement with Poms and Kairos Retreat, as well as FISH service.”
To receive the award, Brooke had to fill out a written application and then answer questions in a press-conference style interview with approximately fifty WGA members. The scholarship will be formally presented during the Senior Awards Assembly in May 2017.
The Evans Scholars Foundation offers this award to approximately 200 scholars each year, granting tuition and housing at the nation’s finest universities. Since 1930, more than 10,000 outstanding students have been awarded Evans Scholarships. Most attend one of the fourteen universities where the Evans Scholars Foundation owns and operates a Scholarship House. At those houses, students live and work together cooperatively.
