Members of the Lyons Township High School Congressional Debate Team competed in the IHSA Debate Championship

Ten members of the Lyons Township High School Congressional Debate Team competed in the IHSA Debate Championship last weekend. Six LT debaters were named semifinalists and made up 10% of all semifinalists. The following six students advanced to the semifinals:
- Ahmad Ayyeh, senior (Brookfield)
- Charlie Cundiff, junior (Western Springs)
- Ben Dreves-Hunt, freshman (LaGrange)
- Aidan Joyce, junior (LaGrange)
- Keeley Mahoney, senior (Willow Springs)
- Loretta Walker, junior (LaGrange Park)
Coach Tom Swiontek said, “It was a great accomplishment and the perfect ending to an unusual and exciting season. All of our students overcame so many obstacles this year and did it with determination, resiliency, and a positive attitude.”
Students involved in Congressional Debate follow the procedures of the senators and representatives in Washington D.C. They write legislation, work in committees, and debate their own bills and resolutions. Speeches are judged, points are accumulated, and both individual and team trophies are awarded by point totals and student voting.
