LTHS Students to Present Original Theater Piece Centered Around Poetry

The students have been working on unpacking the worlds that poets create.

Lyons Township High School students have put together an original theater piece on a subject it’s safe to say most students don’t touch outside of English class: poetry.

The high school’s Theatre Board will be presenting “Showcase 2016: Finding a Light Switch in Poetry” next weekend, according to a press release from the school. Faculty member Ann Dudek is the director of the piece and Sam Land, a junior from La Grange Park, is her assistant director.

The release states the cast members have been exploring poetry deeply, imagining the types of worlds poets create and what scenes would look like off of the page.

Poetry. Does the word set your heart aflutter? Does it make your stomach drop? Do you love the images and words? Do others startle you? Do the meanings seem elusive, teasing your imagination and intellect? Poet Billy Collins tells us to walk inside the poem’s room and feel the walls for a light switch. That’s what this ensemble cast has done with the poems to be presented in the showcase. The ensemble has been exploring the poems, imagining the speakers and their stories, and thinking about what might be in the worlds that these poems open up.

All performances will take place in the North Campus Reber Center at 100 S. Brainard Ave. in La Grange. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children and seniors and free with a LTHS student ID. Tickets will be available for purchase at the box office before the show, and the theater will open 30 minutes before the show starts.
