Lyons Township HS Teaches Students About Democracy Through Mock Election

The election will take place Nov. 3, less than a week before the real event.

As a part of the League of Women Voters of the La Grange Area’s initiative to educate young people about the upcoming election, Lyons Township High School students will be participating in a mock election Nov. 3.

The election is designed to help promote awareness of voting importance, voting procedures and election issues that impact young adults, a release from the school states. It is specifically created to cater to younger Americans.

Lyons Township had a similar event four years ago for the last presidential election.

“The purpose of the mock election is three-fold,” Paul Houston, the chair of the Global Studies Divison at the school, said. “First, mock elections help students understand the process of electing officials and the power of the vote. Secondly, it allows the voices of young people to be heard and engages them in the democratic process. Finally, a mock election stimulates future young voters be encouraging and preparing them to vote when they are eligible.”
