Plymouth Place La Grange Releases October Calendar

Dozens of events will keep those at and around Plymouth Place busy this next month.

The below release is from Plymouth Place Senior Living in La Grange. The establishment will offer many events throughout the next month; another list of happenings exists here, on the Plymouth Place website.

Thursdays, Bible Study, Education Room 2:00-3:00 p.m. Why Job? It’s a simple question that students of Scripture pose to the text: Why read this book? Because the text turns the question around and asks the reader: “Why Job?” Why do terrible things happen to the “blameless” and “upright” servant of God named Job? Why do terrible things happen to us? Join Chaplain Carol and other inquisitive minds to explore the story that begins “There was once a man in the land of Uz…”

Saturday, 10/1: River Cruises Presentation, Dole Hall 10:00 a.m.
The Marketing Department and Viking Travel will co-host a program featuring three River Cruise Travel Companies: Uniworld Boutique River Cruises, Viking River Cruises and Avalon Waterways River Cruises. The program will highlight various destinations and rivers around the world. It will provide each sponsor’s itineraries and newest offerings; their similarities and differences. There will be a Q&A following the program. This program will be open to our Residents as well as the general public.

Steinway Master Pianist Jenny Lee, Dole Hall 3:30 p.m.
Jenny Lee, born in Taiwan, raised in Austria and studied piano in Vienna and Geneva, Switzerland. She has recorded many albums and is one of the most respected young pianists today. She is currently on a Steinway tour.

Sunday, 10/2: Singer Heather Braoudakis “Blue Moon”, Albert Hall 2:00 p.m.

Monday, 10/3: Tea at Two with Travel: Resident European Cruise Program, Dole Hall 2:00 p.m.
Enjoy hearing stories and viewing photos of the residents’ recent trip to Netherlands, Belgium, UK and Ireland while you have tea and cookies.

Monday, 10/3: Hymn Sing, Albert Hall 3:15 p.m.
Sing along with your favorite hymns lead by Rita and accompanied on our beautiful Yamaha grand piano.
Tuesday, 10/4: Blessing of the Animals with Chaplain Carol Taylor, Dole Hall 1:30pm On the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals, let us gather to give thanks for our pets. Bring your pet or a photo of your pet, grand-pet, or other favorite animal. Chaplain Carol will ask God to bless our animals as we celebrate the blessing they are to us.

Tuesday, 10/4: Musician Mike Pleska, Albert Hall 2:15 p.m.

Wednesday, 10/5: Rev. John Ohmer, Slaying Your Goliaths – How God Can Help, LL Game Room 9:30 a.m.
Meet and talk with author John Ohmer who offers spiritual guidance on how to prevail over obstacles. Rev. Ohmer’s book is not a “self-help” book. Rather, the story offers “God-help.” Come and learn how the ancient story of David and Goliath speaks today to us who are facing giant problems. Start your day with spiritual guidance and reassurance that God is with us always, even and especially when we feel ill-equipped to face a giant alone.

Friday, 10/7: You Be the Judge, Education Room 9:30 a.m.
Enjoy lively discussions with resident George Plavac on real court cases.

Friday, 10/7: Cruise to Canada, Dole Hall 3:00 p.m. Our cruise around the world destination this month is to Canada. Enjoy a travelogue. Residents are welcome share any stories and memorabilia you may have and bring your passport for your stamp. Enjoy a treat from this country.

Saturday, 10/8: Cellist Steve Sigurdson, Dole Hall 7:15 p.m.
Special appearance by Steven Sigurdson, an outstanding professional cellist. Steven has been featured cellist on albums by Gloria Estefan and many others and is a voting member of the Academy selecting the Grammy Awards.

Wednesday, 10/12: Entertainment by Pianist Floyd Andrew, Mr. Showman, Albert Hall 2:30 p.m.

Thursday, 10/13: Art Exhibit Reception, LL Art Gallery 4:00 p.m.
The 5th Annual La Grange Art League Exhibit is on display this month. Meet some of the artists, (some of whom are Plymouth Place residents) and hear about their beautiful works of art. Refreshments served.

Friday, 10/14: HealthPro Wellness Seminar, LL Fitness 9:30 a.m.
“Defying Gravity: What’s your balance like?” Clinic: Multi-station falls and balance screening to determine your overall fall risk potential and tips on prevention.

Friday, 10/14: TED Talks, Education Room 3:00 p.m.

Monday, 10/17: Pam Yano: The Cavalier in Art and History”, Dole Hall 1:00 p.m.
The program, “The Cavalier in Art and History” will feature Pam Yano, certified dog trainer, Dawn Heller, resident and her Cavalier dog Victoria. Vitoria is currently in therapy training. Come meet Vitoria and learn about her training for duty in an empathy dog role. All are welcome.

Tuesday, 10/18: Singer/Guitarist Joe Fire, Albert Hall 2:15 p.m.

This fascinating look at our current political scene will feature an lively discussion on the media and the political process.

Friday, 10/21: Economics Today, Education Room 9:30 a.m. Join resident George Plavac to discussion current economic trends and how they affect us.

Saturday, 10/22: Radio Players West, Dole Hall 7:15 p.m.

This Resident Council program takes you back to the radio shows that entertained us before TV. Radio Players West will perform scripts from Our Miss Brooks, The Shadow and Abbott and Costello, complete with sound effects. (Look for our own Dick Best among the actors!)


Monday, 10/24: Advanced Care for Seniors, Education Room 1:00 p.m.
Guest speaker Richard Treptow will present, “Climate Change: The Earth Calls to Us”. Richard Treptow is an environmental scientist deeply committed to building understanding of global climate change. Our earth is experiencing a gradual rise in average temperature caused by greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. If we are to solve this serious problem, we must understand the science behind it.

Wednesday, 10/26: Singer Sandi Haynes, Albert Hall 2:30 p.m.

Wednesday, 10/26: Generations: “Is How Your Brain Works a Big Puzzle?”, Dole Hall 7:15 p.m.
Dr. Neal Bowen, Neuro-Psychologist, will present an interactive discussion unraveling the mysteries of the brain. Invite your family to join you and learn how the brain develops, the functions of the various areas of the brain and why we do & think the way we do!

Join us to pray the Rosary together.

Friday, 10/28: Current Events, LL Game Room 9:30 a.m. Join resident George Plavac in a discussion of current news and events.
Friday, 10/28: Classical/Jazz Pianist Devon Starr, Dole Hall 3:00pm
Devon Starr, who has a PhD in Music, will perform a concert of famous composers. This informational performance about some of the greatest piano concerti, symphonies, operas, and dances ever written (by some of the great composers) will also include “Guess That Composer”, where he will have excerpts/piano renditions of each piece and interesting back stories to share on each of them.
