Riverside Teenager Struck By Car on Way to School

The 14-year-old student was transported to Loyola Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Shortly before 8 a.m. yesterday morning, a Riverside high school student was struck by a car at the intersection of Riverside and Golf Roads. He hasn’t sustained any life-threatening injuries.

Riverside police responded to the scene around 7:54 a.m., arriving to find that the 14-year-old male was being treated by both Riverside and Brookfield paramedics. Both communities had received numerous calls, according to a release from the Riverside Police Department, since the intersection of Riverside and Golf Rd. straddles the border of the two areas.

It was soon revealed the teenager had been struck when he was running from the Brookfield side of the road to the Riverside side to get to his high school in time that morning. He ran into the street and was struck by a 2004 Nissan, which was traveling at approximately 15 mph.

The driver of the involved Nissan, a 39-year-old female resident of Bolingbrook, was on her way to work at the Brookfield Zoo at the time of the accident. She received one citation for failure to exercise due care with a pedestrian in the roadway.

Due to a construction project nearby, traffic in the area around the site of the accident is expected to be extremely heavy for the next two weeks. Yesterday marked the first day of the Washington Ave. bridge project that will cause these delays.
