47th Street Intersection Safety Concerns to be Heard at Second Meeting

This is IDOT's second meeting about proposed safety improvements to the intersection at 47th Street and East Avenue in La Grange.

La Grange residents have another chance to share their views on what should be done to improve safety at the intersection between 47th Street and East Avenue.

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is scheduled to hold its second Community Advisory Group meeting May 29 at the La Grange Park District, 536 East Ave.

A group of neighbors who near the intersection organized in March to lobby against a grade separation at the intersection after IDOT presented that as one possible solution.

“What we’re vying for are options, solutions that are going to ,” group member Sheri Barrette said at the time.

The 47th Street/East Avenue Community Group has collected 124 signatures on a petition opposing any sort of grade separation at the intersection. It also asks elected officials at the local, state and federal levels to represent that position.

“We believe that such a structure would … further endanger village residents and the pedestrian public along 47th Street from East Avenue extending into Western Springs,” the petition reads.

The group agrees that IDOT should take some action to relieve congestion and make the area safer for pedestrians who frequent the area on their way to Sedgwick Park.

All members of the public are welcome at the May 29 IDOT meeting, which is scheduled to run from 10 a.m.-noon.
