Dry conditions coupled with warm temperatures have created ideal conditions for the production of mosquitoes involved in the transmission of West Nile Virus (WNV). The Desplaines Valley Mosquito Abatement District reports that it has found its first West Nile Virus positive mosquitos for the season. While this is not unexpected, the positive samples have occurred earlier than in previous years. As noted in the attached press release, the risk of WNV transmission is still low at this time, however the amplification of WNV within the adult mosquito population will increase as the summer progresses.

Many things can be done by residents to minimize mosquito activity and WNV transmission, such as eliminating sources of standing water on property (unrimmed tires, trash cans, buckets), limiting outdoor activity at dusk and wearing long sleeves/pants and loose fitting light colored clothing. Please visit the Desplaines Valley Mosquito Abatement District website here or the Village website here for more information.
