Bohemian Waxwing Bird Spotted in Lake Forest

A local bird chaser said it's the first time he's ever seen this kind of bird east of Lake Superior.

LAKE FOREST, IL - A Bohemian Waxwing was spotted in Lake Forest by an area bird counter who says he has never seen one like it in nearly 40 years.

Eric Lundquist of Mundelein spotted the bird that breeds in British Columbia and Alaska during a hike at the Skokie River Nature Preserve of the Lake Forest Open Lands Association on New Year’s Day, according to a Daily North Shore report. Lundquist says the bird - not usually spotted east of Lake Superior - was flocking with a bunch of Cedar Waxwings, which are much more prevalent in this area.

“After about a half hour I saw a flock of Cedar Waxwings feeding,” said Lundquist. “I went to look close and I saw a Bohemian Waxwing. I’ve been doing this for 38 years since I was 10 and I’ve never seen a Bohemian Waxwing. Now I have.”
