Brian Urlacher Sells Mettawa Estate For Half Original List Price
The retired Chicago Bears linebacker sold the 9.4-acre property for $1.5 million Thursday after first listing it for $3 million in 2017.
METTAWA, IL — Chicago Bears Hall of Famer Brian Urlacher sold his 9.4-acre Mettawa estate this week for half its original list price and more than $800,000 less than he paid for the property 17 years ago.
The six-bedroom main house was built in 1986 and includes more than 11,000 square feet of total finished living space.
Its "one-of-a-kind" master suite includes a balcony, sitting area, spacious bathroom and 230-square-foot walk-in closet, according to its listing.

Outside, the property includes a full-size basketball court, in-ground trampoline, stocked fishing pond, putting green, two-story playhouse and two barns.

According to its listing, the barns could be used for cars or horses, as local zoning permits up to five horses on the property.

Urlacher purchased the property for $2.312 million in 2004 and first listed it for $3 million in 2017 after reportedly investing more than $1 million in upgrades.
From there, the price was cut six times over the following seven years until falling below $1.6 million last month, according to its listing. An offer was accepted 13 days later.
The $1.5 million sale closed Thursday. The buyers have not yet been identified in public records.
According to the Lake County Assessor's Office, the total market value of the property for taxing purposes is $1.4 million. Its property tax bill was about $42,000 last year, records show.
The new owner will be able to take advantage of a tax rebate of about $8,000 a year via the village of Mettawa, according to listing agent Alex Wolking.
Wolking said there has been more interest in the property from potential buyers over the past six months than the past three years.
"People just need more space, and not only that but they want more space between their neighbors and privacy, and that's become paramount for people, and people are willing to pay a premium for that," Wolking said. "So this particular house —with it being on 9 acres, and tons of space and room to spread out and privacy — it became much more viable."
Urlacher, 42, was drafted ninth in the 2000 NFL Draft and spent his entire 13-year professional career with the Bears. He retired after the 2012 season and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2018.
In a 2016 interview and video tour of the house, Urlacher said his favorite part of the property was being able to fish and play golf in his own back yard.

The recently sold Urlacher home is located in a village where Urlacher's younger brother has been mayor since 2013 and just a few miles from the Chicago Bears facility at Halas Hall.
Earlier this month, Casey Urlacher won re-election to a third term as mayor of the village. The Mettawa mayor, who had been facing federal gambling conspiracy charges ahead of the deadline for submitting nominating petitions, ran as a write-in candidate after former President Donald Trump pardoned him on his final day in office.
