City Hosts Household Chemical Waste Collection Day Next Week

The free event includes drop-off for items like pesticides, fluorescent light bulbs and aerosol products.

The following is from the City of Lake Forest:

The City and SWALCO (Solid Waste Agency of Lake County, IL) will host a FREE household hazardous waste collection event on Saturday, September 27, 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at the City’s Municipal Services Center, 800 N. Field Drive.

Accepted materials include:

  • Aerosol products
  • Anti-freeze and motor oil
  • Fertilizers/herbicides/pesticides
  • Fluorescent light bulbs/CFLs
  • Furniture stripper and varnishes
  • Gasoline and kerosene
  • Household batteries (lithium and rechargeable only)
  • Household cleaners
  • Oil-based paints and paint removers
  • Prescription and over-the-counter medicines and supplements (people and pet); NO DEA-controlled substances

Items that are NOT accepted include:

  • Latex paint
  • DEA-controlled substances
  • Business and medical wastes
  • Farm chemicals
  • Propane tanks
  • Lead-acid and alkaline batteries
  • Explosives
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Smoke detectors
  • Household electronics

SWALCO also offers year-round collection events at its facility in Gurnee at 1311 N. Estes by appointment only on the second Saturday and fourth Monday of every month except for December. For further information, please visitwww.swalco.org or call 847.336.9340.
