Deforestation in Lake Forest Uncovers Surprise Find
Original oak trees planted more than a century ago were found at the Mellody Farm Nature Preserve.

Original oak trees that were planted as part of the Armour Estate in 1909 were noticed for the first time last week when the Lake Forest Open Lands Association removed hundreds of dying and invasive trees at the entrance of the Mellody Farm Nature Preserve.
“We didn’t even know they were there,” Lake Forest Open Lands President John Sentell told the Daily North Shore. “They were hidden for years behind everything else.”
Trees with Dutch elm disease, emerald ash borer and the growth of invasive buckthorn were all problems near Deerpath and Waukegan roads, Sentell said - later adding plans to reforest the area with evergreens, native trees, shrubs, wildflowers and grasses.
