Glenview Man Charged In Fatal Lake Forest Hit-And-Run

A 24-year-old driver fatally struck a 62-year-old pedestrian with a pickup truck before fleeing the scene last November, police said.

LAKE FOREST, IL — Police said a Glenview man was charged Tuesday in connection with a fatal hit-and-run traffic crash last year in Lake Forest.

Zachary Dubofsky, 24, of the 2500 block of Pebbleford Lane, was arrested at the Lake Forest Police Department on a warrant issued a Monday for one count of leaving the scene of an accident involving death or personal injury, according to police.

On the morning of Nov. 12, 2020, the driver of a Ford pickup struck a pedestrian in the 500 block of North Mayflower Road, near Rosemary Road, breaking off the truck's passenger side mirror, police said at the time.

The pedestrian, 62-year-old Lake Forest resident Stephen Kennedy, was still conscious when officers arrived, according to police. Lake Forest Fire Department paramedics rushed him to Advocate Condell Hospital in Libertyville, where he later died.

In January, the Lake County Coroner's Office ruled Kennedy's death to be an accident caused by injuries from being struck by a motor vehicle.

Kennedy was an avid triathlete, serial entrepreneur and devoted father, according to an obituary. After starting his career working for Pfizer, FMC Inc. and Utilities Inc., he founded two firms himself and served as CEO of four others.

At the time of his death, Kennedy operated a company from his nearby home that used electron beam technology to reduce pollution from coal-fired power plants.

Police released images from the scene within a few hours of the incident. Investigators soon collected numerous video clips showing Kennedy, Dubofsky and the Ford F-150 he is accused of driving.

Lake Forest Police Deputy Chief Rob Copeland said the pickup truck belonged to one of Dubofsky's family members, and the Glenview man was the only person of interest questioned in the case.

Detectives determined Dubofsky was behind the wheel at the time of the hit-and-run after getting a tip, Copeland told Patch via email.

"We had a auto repair shop call us and say he had a white ford truck come in and the driver wanted the right side mirror replaced right away. He gave us Dubofsky’s information," Copeland said. "We were able to develop information and evidence from there that implicated Dubofsky as the driver in the incident."

After turning himself in to Lake Forest police and posting the $10,000 cash portion of his bond, Dubofsky was released on bail Tuesday.

Leaving the scene of a fatal traffic crash is a class 1 felony, which can be punished by a maximum of 15 years in state prison.

No attorney information for Dubofsky was immediately available Wednesday morning. He is due back in court May 4 in Waukegan.
