Gorton Community Center Introduces Masterclass Series
Filmmaking, writing, and organization are among the topics to be covered in new series
Gorton Center, a community center located in Lake Forest, IL is proud to announce a new series of masterclasses. Gorton is bringing in local experts to teach these classes so that our community can join virtually to learn a wide range of subjects.
Our first masterclass features writer, director, producer, actor, and public artist Jack C. Newell. He will deconstruct his film 42 Grams in a behind-the-scenes look from a director’s point of view. In this webinar, you will see a breakdown of scenes with storyboards and lookbooks revealing how a film is crafted from concept to implementation to final cut. The masterclass culminates in a dynamic Q&A with students from the Harold Ramis Film School. This masterclass can be purchased for six weeks running and will provide a live link to the class with ticket purchase that can be watched at patron’s convenience and indefinitely.
Local author Rebecca Makkai will teach our second masterclass, “A Local Writing Life.” She achieved national prominence, most recently with her novel The Great Believers – a finalist for both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, and the winner of the ALA Carnegie Medal. Makkai was born and raised in Lake Bluff, Illinois, and has lived her adult life in Lake Forest. She will talk with Barry Benson, Interim Executive Director of the Ragdale Foundation, about living as a professional writer in Lake Forest, coming of age in the community, sustaining a life in the arts, and the connections of her four books to both the North Shore and Chicago.
"Until we can come together in person, it's wonderful to be able to come together virtually to celebrate community and culture,” said Rebecca Makkai, local author and Gorton masterclass instructor. “Gorton is still at the heart of both!”
