Innkeeper Supports Staff, Community Amid Crisis: Lake Forest Hero
Matt Barba, general manager of Deer Path Inn, helped organize an auction to raise over $50,000 to help shuttered local businesses.

LAKE FOREST, IL — When times are tough, heroes emerge. We all know someone who's making a difference right now as we live through unprecedented times. Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize these everyday heroes.
This submission comes from Kimberly Buck of Lake Zurich, who nominated her manager at the Deer Path Inn, Matt Barba.
"Throughout the entire pandemic he has kept us positive and laughing through the hotel's Instagram," Buck said. "Matt has given back to the Lake Forest small businesses through a very successful online auction which made $55,000 and continues to ensure his staff are financially sound through this crisis."

The hotel gave the entirely of the proceeds to local restaurants forced to close under the governor's stay-at-home order, Barba explained.
The hotel's restaurant has shifted gears to provide carryout service after authorities ordered a halt to in-person dining. Last week, it began offering outdoor seating under new safety guidelines.

Buck said Barba is continually thinking of new ways to help his employees get through the crisis.
"Without his leadership I'm not sure where I personally would be at this most difficult time," Buck said, nominating Barba as a local hero for Lake Forest.
"Matt is selfless and does anything he can to provide for our patrons and his staff," she added. "We are family at Deer Path Inn because of his leadership and vision and we feel it everyday."
