Lake Forest Obituary: William Spriegel, MD, 95

William Brooks Spriegel, M.D., passed away on June 16, 2019 at the age of 95. He was born in Detroit, Michigan on March 9, 1924 to William and Gladys (nee Strelinger) Spriegel. William is survived by his loving wife, Catherine R. Spriegel, having celebrated 67 years of marriage in April, and by his sons William B. Spriegel, Jr. (Amanda DeYoung) and John R. Spriegel, M.D. (Linda Gustafson) and four grandchildren: David; Rebecca; Julia and Joel. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Elizabeth Maree Spriegel and granddaughter, Elizabeth Spriegel.
William received his B.S. in Biology in 1945 from the Northwestern University Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, Phi Beta Kappa. He received his B.M. and M.D. in 1947 and 1948 from the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.
William served a rotating internship at Parkland Hospital, Dallas, Texas. Then he completed a residency in psychiatry at the Menninger Foundation School of Psychiatry, Topeka, Kansas.

He served with the U.S. Public Health Service from 1953-1955 in Fort Worth, Texas as a staff psychiatrist.
In 1955, William returned to Chicago and began his private practice and affiliation with the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. In 1996 he retired as an Associate Professor Emeritus of Clinical Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine. Even into his retirement, William was an avid participant in Northwestern’s Religion and Values in Medicine Committee.

He also served as a Psychiatric Consultant for the State of Illinois Department of Human Services-Disability Determination Service from 1985-2005.
William was a long serving member of the Illinois Psychiatric Society, serving as President in 1984-85. He was a Distinguished Life Fellow in the American Psychiatric Association and was also a member of the American Medical Association, the Illinois State Medical Society and the Chicago Medical Society.
He was a strong supporter of the Evanston Boy Scout Troop 3, a loyal Northwestern football fan, an avid concert and theater goer; he enjoyed travel, classical music and time with family. A man of integrity and great generosity, he will be deeply missed.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday June 20 at the Lake Forest Place Chapel, 1100 Pembridge Drive, Lake Forest, IL 60045. Visitation will follow at 3:00 p.m. in or adjacent to the Lake Forest Place Chapel. Burial will be private at Lake Forest Cemetery.
