Naval Station Great Lakes Conducts Disaster Response Exercise

GREAT LAKES, IL — Citadel Gale, an annual disaster response and recovery exercise, begins Monday at Naval Station Great Lakes, Navy officials announced.

Residents should expect additional emergency vehicles in the area and extra traffic near gates to the 1,900-acre facility, according to a spokesperson.

This year marks the 21st edition of the exercise, which is aimed at preparing staff for the effects of a major weather event. The event tends to focus on responses to floods, thunderstorms, mudslides and tornados, according to a spokesperson.

Navy officials described the exercise as an essential part of maintaining the facility before, during and after such events.

"The exercise simulates a storm system whose evolution provides an opportunity to review operating procedures and ensure staff are prepared for the upcoming storm season," according to an announcement from a Navy spokesperson, "including procedures for recovery from major weather events, which includes lifting evacuation orders, reopening the installation, and conducting damage assessments."

Last year's event was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Navy officials said precautions have been put in place to minimize the threat of COVID-19 for participating personnel. The exercise will run until Friday.
