Take a Bike Ride to Lake Bluff Brewing Company

Looking to ride bikes and drink beer? Here's how you can do both without straying far.

What's your favorite day trip to take around Lake Forest or Lake Bluff?

Earlier this summer, the Chicago Reader had a neat feature on bike rides to take around the North Shore -- including one to Lake Bluff Brewing Company.

The bike ride begins in Chicago, with a pit stop for a hamburger at Edzo's in Evanston, followed by a stop at the Baha'i House of Worship in Wilmette. There are more stops along the way before reaching the brewery as a final destination.

It's a really wonderful sounding trip, but if you're looking to stay closer north, or start it from Lake Forest or Lake Bluff, here's how you can make it work.

Starting from Lake Forest/Lake Bluff:

1. Head south on either Green Bay Road or Sheridan until till you get to Fort Sheridan. Take a walk around and enjoy the scenery.

2. Stop at Maria's Bakery in Highwood for an espresso. Smell the wonderful cookies and maybe eat one or two or seven.

3. Keep riding south until you either (A) decide to turn around and ride north to the brewery or (B) till you get to a Metra station to take the North Line to Lake Bluff.

(Along the way you can get barbecue at Real Urban Barbecue in Highland Park. You may not ride as fast afterwards, though.)

If you plan to take the Metra back, you can ride even further south of Evanston and into Chicago. Sheridan road gets a little dicier once you're in the city, but if you stay in Evanston you can enjoy a really beautiful trek along the lake around Northwestern University.
