Accused Shoplifter Dies After Being Detained By Jewel-Osco Staff

CHICAGO, IL — A 55-year-old man died Wednesday at a Lakeview Jewel-Osco store after being detained on suspicion of shoplifting. Officers who responded to a retail theft report found the man unresponsive around 6:45 p.m. at the store in the 3500 block of North Broadway Street.

Officers began CPR on the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

The man's identity is being withheld by the Cook County medical examiner's office. Officials said determination of the cause of death is pending.

Area North detectives are investigating the incident.
