Boystown Becoming More Straight, New Book Says
A new book, "There Goes the Gayborhood," explores the factors that are decreasing the LGBT populations in traditionally gay districts.
There goes the gayborhood.
Or so says a new book by the same name that explores the factors that have led to a decline in same-sex couples living in historically gay neighborhoods.
The book, “There Goes the Gayborhood,” is by sociologist Amin Ghaziani of the University of British Columbia.

“Gay neighborhoods, like the legendary Castro District in San Francisco and New York’s Greenwich Village, have long provided sexual minorities with safe havens in an often unsafe world,” according to the book’s online description. “But as our society increasingly accepts gays and lesbians into the mainstream, are ‘gayborhoods’ destined to disappear? Amin Ghaziani provides an incisive look at the origins of these unique cultural enclaves, the reasons why they are changing today, and their prospects for the future.”
Ghaziani uses news articles, Census data, public opinion polls and more, including 125 people living in Boystown, according to DNA Info. Read interviews from DNA Info here.
