Chicago 'Carmaggedon': Stay Off the Kennedy This Weekend

The demolition of the Ontario Street Bridge will occur over the next three weekends and constrict the already busy Kennedy Expressway.

The Kennedy Expressway, or I-90/94, is already a slow-moving mess much of the time. This weekend, it could look like an evacuation scene from a movie.

"Carmaggedon," it's being called, as construction will constrict the road from 10 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday, June 16.

The Illinois Department of Transportation is demolishing the westbound Ontario Street Bridge to the eastbound Kennedy. Because of the size of the bridge and the way it's built, the demolition will be done over the course of the following three weekend.

This weekend, the eastbound Kennedy will be closed from Chicago to Grand and only one lane westbound. Beginning at Diversey eastbound lanes will be reduced to two. Traffic will be diverted onto the eastbound Ohio Street exit using temporary pavement.

IDOT notes a few solutions for drivers:
  • Exit onto Western Avenue as an alternative from I-90 to I-290
  • Lake Shore Drive remains open in both directions
  • I-55 and I-290 can be utilized by motorists traveling from the South and West sides of the city
