CHICAGO, IL — The Chicago Cubs are hiring retired catcher and World Series champion David Ross as their next manager, with the announcement confirming Ross' new position expected Thursday, ESPN reported. Ross, 42, will return to the Cubs three years after his Game 7 home run in the 2016 World Series, which helped the team win its first title in 108 years.

Ross voiced interest in the job after the Cubs fired manager Joe Maddon in September. Maddon, 65, has been named the next manager of the Los Angeles Angels, the club announced last week.

During his 15-year MLB career, Ross also won a World Series with the Boston Red Sox and played for the Braves, Dodgers, Padres and Pirates. Ross has served as an ESPN baseball analyst and as a Cubs special assistant to baseball operations since his retirement, according to ESPN.
