Cubs Show Farmers Market, Ice Rink Renderings with Advertising Towers

The alderman says nothing has been agreed to regarding signage in the plaza, but the Cubs' new designs show large pylons with advertisements surrounding a farmers market and Christmas scene.

New design renderings released Thursday by the Chicago Cubs visualize what the Triangle Plaza adjacent to Wrigley Field could look like post-construction, complete with ice rinks, farmers markets and multiple advertising towers.

The Triangle Plaza, which sits at the corner of Clark and Addison streets, is part of the Cubs $500 million redevelopment plan for Wrigley Field and the surrounding neighborhood.

The team already announced they plan to construct a in the outfield, but according to their planned development, the team is also considering 6,000 additional square-feet of signs in the Triangle Plaza.

“Some of the big parts of that (planned development) is the acquisition of city property, rights of way, a cul-de-sac on Patterson Avenue and a very liberal sign package that would completely change the character of Clark and Addison,” Tunney said at a South East Lake View Neighbors meeting. “… No numbers have been agreed to in terms of signage, whether it be in the plaza or on the hotel.”

The planned development also details more than 6,500-square-feet of signs on the new hotel planned where the McDonald’s sits, as well as more than 35,000-square-feet of signs on the exterior of Wrigley Field.

Additional designs, which the Chicago Tribune says the Cubs declined to release to the press, show a new entrance to Wrigley Field on the ballpark’s west side. The rendering shows a large, elaborate gate detailed with decorative metalwork, a feature to hopefully relieve congestion as fans leave the park, the Tribune writes.
