Don Zimmer, a former Cubs manager who led the team to a 1989 division title, died Wednesday, June 4, 2014. He was 83.
According to The Chicago Tribune, Zimmer spent 66 years in baseball as a player and coach. He also had a stint with the Cubs as a player in 1960-1961, according to Baseball-Reference.com. Zimmer was named Manager of the Year in 1989.
He began his career in 1954 with the Brooklyn Dodgers, playing alongside Jackie Robinson and winning the World Series in 1955. He went 265-258 as manager of the Cubs, and he was fired from the job 37 games into his fourth season with the club. His termination followed an ultimatum for a contract extension, according to the Tribune.
