Lake View Sees Increase in Violent Crime

Lake View was one of only three neighborhoods in Chicago where the violent crime went up in recent years, according to a study by Yale University.

Lake View is one of only 10 Chicago neighborhoods that experienced an increase in crime between 2011 and 2013, according to a study from Yale University.

Lake View was also one of only three neighborhoods where the violent crime went up, with 435 counts of violent crime in the first 11 months of 2012, the study found.

"Many of these communities [including Lake View] are traditionally low-crime communities," the study, by Andrew V. Papachristos, Ph.D., states. "It's important to note that many of these communities experience such low annual rates of crime that large percentage changes in crime rates may be subject to higher error rates due to the lower statistical power of the sample."

Other neighborhoods where crime went up include Lincoln Square, North Park, Jefferson Park and Mont Clare.

The Yale study examined crime in Chicago between 1965 and 2013 and found a significant decline in overall crime throughout the city, with violent crime at its lowest rate in 2013 than it has been since 1967. The study found that, with a rate of 1,045.15 violent crimes per every 100,000 people (in 2012), the violent crime rate is closer to Houston and Minneapolis, as opposed to "crime capitols" St. Louis and Detroit.
