Landmark Status Granted to Police Station Turned LGBT Senior Home

The Boystown development will keep its historic façade, with Chicago officials approving the building's landmark status.

One of Chicago’s oldest police stations was approved as an official City of Chicago landmark by City Council, Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s office announced.

The Town Hall Police Station at 3600 N. Halsted St. in Lake View’s Boystown neighborhood is undergoing a transformation into one the Midwest’s first housing complex for LGBT seniors. Crews broke ground at the site in June.

Built in 1907, the former police station was closed in 2010 when the 19th District’s new police headquarters opened next door. It was later sold to Heartland Housing Inc., which purchased it from the city for $1.

While Heartland plans to transform the building and adjacent site into a 79-unit, $27 million apartment complex, much of the historic façade will remain. Landmark status will protect the building’s exterior from significant alteration.
