Listen to the John Hancock Center Tower Creak and Sway on a Windy Night

In a 60 mph wind, the John Hancock Center tower could sway 5 to 8 inches.

On Thursday night, a resident of the Hancock building recorded this audio of the skyscraper creaking as it swayed in the high winds, which were measured at upwards of 60 miles an hour that night in Chicago.

While Rochelle and Fairdale were getting battered by a EF-4 tornado, spinning at 180 to 200 miles an hour, the rest of the Chicago area was getting hit with heavy winds. About 75 miles away from Fairdale, home to about 150 people, stands the John Hancock Center — one of the tallest buildings in the United States, with 100 stories reaching 1,127 feet into the sky. There are offices, restaurants and 700 condominiums inside. More people live in this building than live in little Fairdale.

”The design concept allows only five to eight inches of sway in a 60 mph wind,” reads the “Interesting Facts” page on JohnHancockCenterChicago.com. and the building should withstand winds of 132 miles per hour.
