Murphy's Red Hots Closes Its Doors After 30 Years In Lake View

Fans of the longtime North Side hot dog stand lined up in droves on Saturday.

CHICAGO — Murphy's Red Hots officially closed its doors after several decades at Belmont and Racine in Chicago's Lake View neighborhood. Many fans lined up to get their last hot dog at the stand on Saturday at 1211 W. Belmont Ave.

In a heartfelt message posted on the Murphy's Red Hots website, owner Bill Murphy showed appreciation for his customers.

"Thank you all for your support and even more so, your friendship over the years," the post read. "I will very much miss seeing all of you on such a regular, sometimes daily, basis."

Murphy explained that "the time has come to switch things up a bit," and spend more time with his wife and family.

"Keep your eyes open Murph Doggers, you never know where or when we will meet again!"

The Murphy's Red Hots building, which Murphy owned, has been sold, according to a report by the Chicago Tribune. He said condos will go up in its place.

“Just what we need," he joked to the Tribune.

The decades-old restaurant was listed in the Vienna Beef Hot Dog Hall of Fame, which recognizes vendors' contributions to their community, quality of their product served and good customer service.
