North Side Warming Center Available As Freezing Temps Continue

CHICAGO, IL — The city is reminding people that warming centers are available for those needing to escape below-freezing temperatures. Frigid temperatures are expected until at least New Year's Day, according to the National Weather Service. The NWS has issued a warning of "excessive cold risk."

A warming center is available on Chicago's North Side at 845 W. Wilson Ave. in Uptown. People are encouraged to phone 3-1-1 to ask for a well-being check for others, and receive information about support services that help with home heating costs.

The city warns that frostbite and hypothermia can set in quickly with below-freezing temperatures. Symptoms of hypothermia include stiff muscles, a puffy or swollen face, shivering, slow breathing and confusion.

South Side: 8650 S. Commercial Ave.

Englewood Center: 1140 W. 79th St.

Garfield Center: 10 S. Kedzie Ave.

King Center: 4314 S. Cottage Grove Ave.

Trina Davila: 4312 W. North Ave.

The city will face frigid temperatures through New Year's Day, with dangerous wind chills. Light snow is also expected on and off throughout the week. The National Weather Service issued a wind chill advisory from 9 p.m. Tuesday until 11 a.m. Wednesday, and another wave of arctic air is expected to hit over the weekend.
