UPDATE: Man Drowns in Belmont Harbor, Recovered by Scuba Team
Firefighters found him face down in the water after deploying two scuba teams when onlookers saw a man struggling.
A Chicago Fire Department scuba team pulled an adult male from the mouth of Belmont Harbor in Lake View Thursday.
Deputy District Chief Ron Dorneker said crews responded around 5 p.m. After a witness on the scene saw the man struggling in the water.
The man was immediately transfered to nearby St. Joseph Hospital where he was described in "very critical" condition. Police News Affairs Officer Joshua Purkiss later told the Chicago Tribune the man had died.
Officials don't yet know how the man fell in the water or whether he was swimming.
Chicago firefighter Enrique Carrillo, a 17-year firefighter veteran, made the first rescue of his short 9-month scuba diving career when he found the man face down underwater.
"I'm just glad all the training paid off," Carrillo said after the rescue.
He said in the rocky and rough water, visibility was reduced to 2-feet at best, and it took him several passes to find the man. It's still unclear how long he was in the water.
