Tunney Puts Pressure on Cubs Wrigley Rehab: 'They're a Needy Group'

The Lake View alderman says he expects to see construction permits for the ballpark renovation now that Chicago "rolled out the red carpet."

The Chicago Cubs may have gotten the green light to move forward on their $500 million renovation of Wrigley Field and surrounding neighborhood, but now Lake View Ald. Tom Tunney (44th) is asking, “Where are the permits?”

Tunney called out the Cubs Wednesday, saying the city “rolled out the red carpet” for the baseball team during negotiations, and now he wants progress, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

“It’s time for them to build, like they said (they would) postseason,” Tunney said, accoriding to the Sun-Times. “I’d expect permits to be there. ... I would have hoped, at this point, that they would be doing the permits.”

When reminded that the Cubs are waiting to hash out a deal with the Wrigley Rooftops to avoid a lawsuit, Tunney fired back.

“They’re a needy group,” the alderman told the Sun-Times. “That wasn’t part of the agreement. They’ve got a private arrangement with the rooftops. I don’t have any control over that. They should start construction.”

While Cubs spokesman Julian Green told the publication the team is ready to move forward with electrical and structural construction soon, the heated comment from Tunney is just another chapter in the controversial history between the two parties.
