Walgreens, Potbelly Fail Food Inspections

Patch combed through food inspection reports of local restaurants, cafes and grocery stores. The results are available here.

Patch examined some of this November's food inspection reports from Lake View, and found that five restaurants in the neighborhood have failed inspections since Dec 9. This information has been collected from publicly available data published by the Chicago Department of Public Health's Food Protection Program. The data is available here.

To fail and inspection, the establishment had to have serious violations that weren't correctable during the inspection. A failed rating does not mean that the restaurant's license is automatically suspended.

Walgreens, 3817 N. Clark St.

Inspection Date: Dec. 3
Inspection Type: License
Results: Fail
Comments:
A cooler was found at an improper temperature (it was 44.6 - 46 degrees, and it must be below 40 degrees), handwashing facilities must be fully equipped with soap and towels. There's no evidence that outer openings are rodent or insect proofed. Approximately 40 rat droppings were observed int he boiler room area, the basement dry storage/shelving areas and the rear dock area. Floors require a detailed cleaning. A food manager must be present when potentially hazardous foods are being prepared and served. Note: this location is not yet open for business, and it did pass a re-inspection on Dec. 9.

Comments:
Ice was not protected during storage inside of the ice machine — a black slimy substance was observed in the machine. The dish washing facilities were not maintained or operated and while running and draining water in the right side of the three-compartment sink, water came up in the middle of the sink. The cooler was not the proper temperature, the cutting board at the food prep table needs replaced and hood/filters above the ovens and the vent covers inside the restroom require a detailed cleaning.

Royal Indian Grill, 3223 N. Clark St.

Inspection Date: Dec. 9
Inspection Type: License Re-Inspection
Results: Fail
Comments:
There's no evidence that outer openings are protected from rodents/insects (there's a 1/4 inch gap under the door). Soap and paper towels must be provided at hand sinks. The hood and filters above the hot cooking equipment requires a detailed cleaning. The floors along the wall and in all corners require a detail cleaning, and a visible thermometer must be provided in all coolers and freezers.
