Whose Igloo is This?

Giant winter house built from chunks of ice stands at Wacker and Columbus in Chicago and mystifies passersby.

If you’ve been walking or driving in Chicago you may have passed an unusual structure It appears to be an igloo built from chunks of ice near a Upper Wacker Drive and Columbus, a major intersection. A picture of the igloo was posted to Reddit by a user who said it was built by a homeless man.

A few commenters on Reddit opined:

Yea at Wacker and Columbus?! Property tax is gonna be a real bitch.

nm, looks like he’s already got it up on air bnb to offset his “expenses”

Location, Location, Location. I have been telling bum bob this for years.

At first I was wondering why he made it a box, then realized it must be really hard to make those iconic igloos with the domed roof. I mean, imagine holding them all up and trying to put in the top ones.

Snow is a great insulator

It’s upper wacker... I’m sure they’ll be fine. I’m pretty sure the dark knight was filmed right below that on lower wacker and lower lower wacker.

However, the igloo builder is not a homeless man. He’s David Sudler, a 58-year-old impressively bearded man who lives nearby and likes to clear the sidewalks of snow and ice. Sudler finished the structure Tuesday night, according to DNAinfo Chicago reporter David Matthews:

Armed with just a chisel, shovel, and salt, Sudler said he began his work around New Year’s Eve and built the igloo over two nights. He lifted the ice slabs, some of them weighing up to 80 pounds, himself and used a milk crate to stack the snow on the igloo’s “roof.”

Sadler did his work at night, when there’s less traffic on the busy thoroughfare. ...

He said he plans to pick flowers in Lincoln Park this week, lay them in the igloo and spend a night in his creation, though it’s unknown how long it will stay.
