LZHS All Class Reunion to be Historic

The Class of 1978 members planning a big reunion.

Lake Zurich High School in the 1970s was a small school where everyone knew each other.

Friendships were forged across all grades and generations of Lake Zurich families graduated from the school.

Hector Garcia, Class of ’78, is hoping to see all his friends from high school in one place. His class is organizing an all grade high school reunion.

Every member of every graduating class is invited to attend, he said. It’s being called a “historic reunion,” he said.

It’s going to be a great event, Garcia said.

The Class of ’78 reunion committee had begun planning for the 35th reunion and had set up a booth at Alpine Fest. Alumni from other years approached the committee asking about the reunion. Committee members decided to start planning the 35th reunion but to open it up to every LZHS graduate, he said.

The historic reunion is planned on Oct. 4 and 5 during LZHS homecoming weekend. An icebreaker at J&D’s Restaurant 26400 N. Rand Road, Wauconda, is planned at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4. The reunion committee has a VIP area at the Homecoming game for alumni and a shuttle between the hotel and the school. The following evening is the main event from 6:30 p.m. to midnight at J&D’s.

Drink prices will be rolled back to 1970s and 1980s prices, Garcia said. The cost is $38 for both nights. There is a cash bar.

“No one has ever done this for Lake Zurich High School,” Garcia said. “What we are trying to do is get this to be a big event so people will come every four years and keep doing this for alumni.”

The all class reunion is also a way to increase participation in LZHS’s alumni organization and increase membership, Garcia said.

Garcia now lives in Palatine. His children went to LZHS as did his brothers and sisters. Garcia and his family will be attending. There are other big families in Lake Zurich who’ve gone to the high school for generations. The reunion will be multi-generational.

“It was a small school…that’s why everybody knows everybody,” Garcia said. “If you are from Lake Zurich, you knew a lot of people. That’s the way it was in Lake Zurich.”

He’s hoping to see friends and classmates he has not seen in 35 years.
