Several Chickens Die In Shirley Road Structure Fire

The cause of the fire is under investigation, according to the Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department.

LAKE COUNTY, IL — Several chickens were killed when a structure behind a home in the 21100 block of West Shirley Road in unincorporated Palatine caught fire Monday morning. The Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department responded to a report of a structure fire Monday, and said when the first units arrived at the home, they discovered that a detached structure housing chickens and storage was on fire. According to the department, the fire spread to an adjacent shed.

According to a release, crews from additional departments, including Barrington, Barrington Countryside, Buffalo Grove, Countryside, Fox River Grover, Long Grove, Wauconda, and Wheeling assisted at the scene, while the Mundelein and Schaumburg fire departments provided change of quarters assistance to cover additional requests for help.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, the department said, adding that there's a preliminary damage estimate of $25,000.

The department said nine chickens were lost in the fire, according to owner. No human injuries were reported.

A relative of the homeowners commented on the department's Facebook page post of photos from the fire, stating that "the barn is gone but everyone is fine."

The Lake Zurich Fire Department would like to remind residents to install working smoke detectors, make and practice an escape plan, and consider installing an automatic fire-sprinkler system.
